Recently got a new apartment and plan to let my family (mum and 2 siblings) live with me. I’m scared about the fear of transmission, how long will getting them vaccinated take? I hate the worry that comes with the fear of potential transmission, don’t want to experience it again… What should I do?
@Bansah1 @ThomasTu @Caraline
Hi @sam12,
I understand what you mean. I don’t know where you live but they start immediately. Speak to your doctor about where to find a place for them to receive their vaccines. In the west pharmacies, doctors offices, etc. are places one can get such vaccines. Hopefully, you can find a place with the 2 course shots.
Hi Sam and congratulations on finding an apartment.
If you follow personal hygiene habits there shouldn’t be a worry of passing virus on.
Don’t share toothbrush’s, razor blades.
I know this disease does carry lots of worry about passing it on but it’s blood to blood which is hard to do. I worried for years and really it was overwhelming and unnecessary. I hope you don’t .
Like your blood to their wound. Even then it’s not a guarantee they will get it.
I became pregnant before my husband was vaccinated. And never passed the virus on.
Hi @sam12,
Great to hear that you have talked to them about vaccination and protecting themselves.
I just wanted to mention that there isn’t much transmission risk at all living with people with hepatitis B in most situations (even if they are unvaccinated). As @Caraline has mentioned, there are specific things you can do such as not sharing personal items and cleaning up any blood from cuts, but otherwise most casual interactions are fine.
Also the risk of transmission is dependent on your viral load (and if you are on treatment), the lower the viral load the lower the risk. Do you know your HBV DNA level?
Thomas
Thank you! @ThomasTu @Bansah1 @Caraline
I’m sorry I’m taking a lot of time to respond… Will keep personal hygiene up and get them vaccinated…
Can I share a washing machine use with them? Can I share a bed with them?
Hi@ sam12,
Yes, you can share anything except for stuff that could lead to contact with your blood. You can not share razor, toothbrush, needles, etc. with anyone. Sleeping together, sharing a washer, eating together, etc. is safe. Remember HBV is a blood borne virus, (meaning it’s transmitted through contact with an infected blood) so anything that does not lead to blood being present can be deemed safe. Sharing a washer, sharing a bed, eating, holding hands, etc. does not lead to one getting infected and is safe. Please, worry less and enjoy staying with your family. Bansah1
THank you very much! @Bansah1
Most definitely can. HBV is share blood to blood, open wounds etc.
I lived with many people and they never got virus from me. Even became pregnant before husband was vaccinated. (I wasn’t aware of the dangers of HBV)
Please don’t be too worried to the point of not engaging in life.
You can cook with family. If you cut yourself, clean wound and just put a Band-Aid on and continue cooking. You can do anything that anyone else does except what @Bansah1 has said.
Hi @sam12,
I wouldn’t worry about the washing machine being a transmission risk. This question was also addressed in other threads, you may want to check them out if you have any other queries:
