Does Tenofovir impact blood sugar level?

I have been taking Tenofovir 300 mg for almost six months and the virus was suppressed to a very low level (<10 IU) from more than 10 million IU, which was good. However, recently I was tested as higher blood sugar level (A1C at 5.6), which is at the borderline of prediabetes.

I don’t have a family history. I am very aware of my blood sugar level and maintains a very healthy lifestyle. I just found some reports that the HIV antiviral medication (TDF is also for HIV) may cause the insulin resistance and increase the level of blood sugar. Is this true? Can any expert here provide some information regarding this. If it is true, it is terrifying that I just took six months of this medication and my blood sugar level was elevated.

Is there any medication for anti HBV that may not impact blood sugar level?

Thank you so much!

Hi @geomo,
I have not heard anyone have this experience while on TDF. I have a question, did you test your A1c prior to starting TDF? If so, what were the results.? Also remember just because your A1c is at 5.6 now does not mean TDF is causing the increase. The research I saw did not show any increase in A1c numbers for the participants. You might want to look for other sources such as having a belly, consuming too much sugary and high carbs, etc. Best, Bansah1
