Hep B and Transmission to baby

Hi to this forum I need your advice I was positive with the hepatitis b during my pregnancy my viral load was 43iu my baby have been vaccinated but for the past few months I get so worried about my baby thinking that am still at risk to her it affecting me mentally

Hi @Bah_Kajatu,

Thank you for sharing your story and sorry to hear about your anxieties. Perhaps it will be helpful to know that no case of mother to child transmission has been reported with a mother’s viral load of less than 20000 IU/mL (~50 times higher than your viral load). As such, the risk of transmission is very very low in this case. You can confirm this is the case with a simple blood test, which can also check whether they are protected from any further infection (anti-HBs antibody level).

Hope this helps,
Thomas

Hi to this forum hepatitis b is affecting me mentally I was positive during my pregnancy my baby was vaccinated at birth she is three months old my viral load was 43iu and not in any treatment

Hi,
I want to know about the antibody positive and my viral load is 43iu/ml and am currently pregnant.

Dear @Bah_Kajatu,

Welcome to the forum, and thanks for your question. Your low viral load is a great sign and the risk of transmission to your child is very low (particularly if they are provided with appropriate vaccination within hours of birth). The anti-HBe antibody positive test shows that your body has an immune response against the infected cells and is likely the reason your HBV DNA levels are so low.

Hope this helps,
Thomas

Hi need help am going through so much thought right now I have a 5 month old baby I was positive with the hep b during my pregnancy my viral load was low 43 my baby was alread vaccinated but the problem is I have to wash my baby hand each time she scratch me sometime I cry on my self that I have to put this baby through this just because I fear of me being risk to her now because I my fear of blood sometimes I don’t know how I get wound or scratch it affecting me mentally I do things repeatedly wasting my baby formula all because I fear that if i touch any of her things with scratch on my hand I put her at risk I need a advice am not being my self lately

@Bah_Kajatu

I’m so sorry you are going through this. You should be enjoying your beautiful baby., not being anxious or fearful.
I do know how you feel. I used to feel like that too. I think I’ve had this disease for so long that I don’t feel as anxious anymore. Because no one has gotten it from me.
I have been chronic HBV for 40 years. Had 3 children and a husband-unvaccinated. And no one got it.
If your baby has been vaccinated and you are covering your wounds , baby should be fine.
Please try and relax. HBV is caught blood to blood. So if baby has a wound and your blood gets into baby’s wound.
I hope this helps and keep in touch.
Blessings

Hi @Bah_Kajatu,
Please, you can’t continue to live like this. Self-stigmatizing yourself is the worst thing you can do. As we have mentioned in previous responses to you, the chances of transmission in your situation are very low based on your results and your baby being vaccinated. I will worry if my baby is not vaccinated, but that is not the case here. I empathize with you, but I also think you are not helping your mental health by having continued anxiety about infecting your child. I agree with @Caraline that you should be enjoying your baby, and not being anxious or fearful around them.

If you can get gloves, try wearing it if that will make you comfortable. You can also trim the baby’s nails if that will help and avoid scratching. These are some little things you can do, if it will make a difference. Best, Bansah1

Dear @Bah_Kajatu,

I’m sorry to hear about your struggles, but really the risk of transmission with such a low viral load is negligible. It is really highly unlikely that you will transmit through scratches or even giving birth, given that you did all the right things (including birth dose vaccination). I hope you get news of your baby’s antibody levels soon and can then enjoy motherhood without this anxiety.
