Hepatitis B in Nigeria: discussion thread

I don’t have cancer. It’s not my portion IJN

Hello Bansah, I need help reading my lab results. I’ve tried to post my results here but for some reason, it’s not uploading. Do you have an email or a WhatsApp number where I can forward them to?

Thank you in advance.

@Prince_Okinedo doesn’t reply his messages.

Hey, if it’s your first time posting your message requires approval. Maybe that is why. If that is not the case, then try taking a good picture and attach it to your message. I hope this works. Bansah1

I have tried but it still says the same thing

You message is up now. Your surface antigen quantitative is just above 3000 which is not bad. People with such lower numbers are more successful in gaining functional cure, which is marked by a surface antigen converting from positive to negative. This number is higher in most patients, for example mine is in the 20k. All the medications in clinical trials are targeting patients with low numbers like yours as that is much easier to work with.

You do not have antibodies which is expected in a chronic person. Keep up with your monitoring. Bansah1

Thank you so much but does it mean that I don’t have chronic HBV?

Hi @Oyindamola_Okunola,
Welcome to the community. No, your results do not indicate that. Whether chronic or acute depends on how long you have been diagnosed or had the infection. If it has been more than 6 months since being diagnosed, then it is a chronic infection. If it’s less than 6 months then it is an acute infection. I don’t know where you fall since you did not share this information. But currently, you are indicated to still have HBV. The majority of patients who acquire it from birth are always chronic because they have had it since they were born until when they were diagnosed. I hope this helps. Best, Bansah1

Hello, @bansah1 @ThomasTu

Thank you for your support thus far. I have gotten my complete test and I will like that you help me to check it. The viral load and all. Please find attached. God bless.

Hi @Oyindamola_Okunola,
Thanks for sharing these results. All your results taken together indicate that you do have HBV but it is currently stable. There is presently no replication going on which is great. Because at some point you had replications, you have no immunity, and your surface antigen is positive, etc., I think this might be a possible chronic infection. @ThomasTu will comment soon on this as well. Take it easy, one step at a time. Bansah1

Yes, mostly agree with @Bansah1. There is low level replication - your HBV DNA levels are relatively low at ~2000, which means the risk of transmission to others is low. Disease progression is also relatively low in patients with these levels of HBV DNA. It may be worthwhile getting a fibroscan to get insight into your liver health (e.g. if there has been injury in the past) as well as a liver function test to determine if you have active inflammation.
