Viral Load Rebound While On Tenofovir

Hello everyone, I’ve been on Tenofovir Disproxil Fumerate (TDF) for 2+ years now, 6 months ago I changed to a different brand due to scarcity and cost of initial brand. However, in my routine follow-up viral load test, it was seen that the viral load has increased from the suppressed level before although the liver scan and liver function tests were normal. I’ve now been continued with the initial brand I was using, and I’m scared to have developed Resistance. In need of your comments and advices please. Below are my results:

Baseline Viral Load;

After 1 year of TDF;

After 2 years of TDF

Recent LFT & Combo

Thank you in anticipation of your kind responses.

Dear @Samad_ibrahim,

This is indeed concerning that your viral load is so high while on antivirals. You mentioned that you had changed to a new brand, could you provide us with a picture of this? And how about what you’re currently taking? This information would provide a better understanding of what may be happening.

You did the right thing by checking after switching to a new brand. The switch back to the original brand is also the right thing to do. I don’t believe you have developed resistance. This should be confirmed by your viral load returning to low after another assay of your viral load, say after 6 months. If your viral loads are back to very low, I would raise the issue of the second brand with the manufacturer and the agency that authorized the brand.

Thank you @ThomasTu, this was the brand I changed to:

And this was what I was originally on and the one I returned to use:

Thank you @Stephenw for the reassurance, I’ll be following up with a repeat viral load in the few months to come.
Thank you once again.

It may be worthwhile reporting this to your pharmacist and doctor that the Getz medication was associated with increase in your viral load levels. There may be mechanisms to raise this to determine if it is a common effect for that batch of medication.

Thank you @ThomasTu, I did so during my last visit to my physician, in which he said he’ll follow the issue up.
